In this exercise continuous alternate pickings (up and down) are performed with a plectrum on all strings. While the left hand fingers the notes, the right hand mutes the strings to keep the sound short and crisp (palm mute). This is especially important when using distortion as otherwise too much disturbing background noise would be generated.
The alternate picking exercises are included in the Guitar Lovers Studies PDF or as play along track in the Jamtracks PDF which feature high graphic resolution for printing and integrated sound.
