Interval qualities

There are five different interval qualities, which are not applicable to all intervals:

  • pure only applies to simple intervals of fourths, fifths or octaves and their octave doublings (e.g. compound intervals like tenths or twelfths),
  • major or minor applies to seconds, thirds, sixths or sevenths and their octave doublings,
  • diminished or augmented is theoretically applicable to all intervals, but practically these qualities are rare for thirds, sixths and octaves.
