The major arpeggio consists of the chord tones root (1), major third (3) and fifth (5) which correspond to the notes A, C# and E in the key of A. In this exercise these tones are sequenced upwards by groups of four: 1, 3, 5, 1 (octave), skipping to 3, 5, 1, 3 (octave), skipping to 5, 1, 3, 5 (octave) and so on. When the highest note within a pattern is reached, the order of the notes is reversed and played downwards (see bar 3).
